Certified
Doula (DONA)
Giving
birth, in all likelihood, will be the most powerful experience
in a woman s life. As a doula, I always feel incredibly blessed
and honored to be invited into a family to assist them in making
their birth the safe, nurturing, life-affirming gift that it
is. Toward
that end, I take my role as a doula very seriously. I want
to help Moms, their families, and birth partners to become informed
participants in their births.
My
work as a doula begins long before the onset of labor. During
prenatal meetings I work to answer questions, offer non-biased
information, talk about birth preferences, write birth plans, discuss
and work through fears and anxiety, and basically get to know my
clients and what they want out of the birthing experience. As
a doula I do not make decisions for my clients, but act as an advocate. I
provide emotional and physical support. During labor I offer
words of encouragement, massage, guided imagery, advice on position
changes, and support and advice for the birthing partner. I
respect any choices you make, and help advocate for you, to help
bring those ideas to fruition. I am experienced in both
hospital and home birth environments. I
also will visit you during the postpartum period to ease the
transition into motherhood, talk about your birthing experience,
help with breastfeeding issues, do some laundry etc.
I have
been involved in the field for six years now. I am
the mother of two children and I live in Dutchess County. I
have a B.A. in Human Ecology, and was a certified teacher. Until
recently, I was a Resident Manager, working with pregnant and parenting
young women at a non-profit organization.
I am willing to travel outside of the
county for clients.

Recommendation
letter Jill
Kiernan was an important participant at the births of both of
my children. I birthed at home and was supported by my husband
and two
midwives, but my births were long and hard. Jill was there during the whole
process of labor. Often, as my husband and I worked together,
she slipped into the background to organize a meal, give reassurance to concerned
relatives on the phone, or stocked the birthing tub with fresh
towels. Then she would be right next to me while my husband rested. Sitting
on the edge of the bed, she rubbed my back with each surging
contraction and softly offered words of encouragement. Jill helped keep me
laughing and light hearted during the early stages of labor and offered compassion
and support after many hours of intense contractions left me feeling wasted
and discouraged. She seemed to read each scene and intuitively know how to
best provide assistance. Her calm, nurturing energy helped me stay centered
and confident even through the most trying moments of my labors.
Jill is an
amazing doula.
