While making my way through nursing school, I often pondered the reasons I thought I had wanted to become a nurse. Then came the semester we did Obstetrics!
With an audible 'click', everything fell into place and I had found my reason. I fell in love with OB almost immediately, and got my first glimpse of how truly amazing our bodies are! After I graduated, I worked in the medical/surgical unit until an opening came up in OB, and I've been there ever since.

I chose to teach Childbirth Education because I love to teach, I want to share my passion, and if I can, I want to help women realize how strong they are, and what their bodies are capable of. As products of the society we now live in, women have lost touch with their inner strength and have lost trust in the birth process. As a result, we all too often make choices that pose numerous unnecessary risks to our health and the health of our babies.

Having a baby isn't just a dinner date you show up for; it's a marathon you need to prepare for, and you have all of the tools you need at your fingertips, right on this website!

Take the time to educate yourself and make informed decisions. Enlist others
to help you. It is the most amazing and empowering journey you will ever
make! For me to have even one small part in that process is an honor. I love what I do!

I am the mother of two amazing and beautiful girls, ages 3 and 6. My first labor was long and fairly easy, but with a sudden and very intense second stage. I learned a lot during that birth, and have to take responsibility for not telling my doctor what I really wanted. My second labor was everything I wanted it to be, with the support I needed (my husband AND a doula), a doctor that honored my wishes, and the most wonderful water birth.

The key is to educate yourself, to have a birth plan, and to have the support people that can help you stay the course. I wish you all the best on your journey through childbirth.

Training:
Graduate of UCCC Nursing Program, 1997

Experience:
RN for the Family Maternity Center of The Kingston Hospital for the past nine years.
Certified Childbirth Education Instructor for the past eight years.
I developed the childbirth education program currently in place, which, in addition to the four week Childbirth Education class for the first time Mom, includes a Spanish Childbirth Ed class, a one-day "Refresher" class for the returning Mom, an Infant Safety class for all new parents and whatever care givers they'd like to bring, and a Sibling Preparation class to help your firstborn learn about the new baby that will be coming home soon!

I am also excited to have a new program in place here for the first time in Ulster County called "Baby Signs". It's a wonderful class for parents to learn how to teach their babies sign language...teaching them to communicate before they are able to talk. It's becoming a well known fact that babies are capable of learning so much earlier than we realized, and this class is exciting proof of that research.

I recently took over patient education and outreach, and my goal is to make the women in our community aware of the services available at The Kingston Hospital. We have a new face, a new perspective, many new alternatives, and we want you to get to know us.

This year we held our first annual Baby Fair which we called "A Special Delivery", and it was a wonderful opportunity for women who are planning to have a baby to come and see our facility, attend several short educational programs on some interesting topics, visit a number of local vendors and community agencies with services available for expectant Mom's, and get lot's of free goodies! Keep your eyes open for next year's return of this fun event!
